Healthy teeth are not always about having a straight and perfectly aligned set of teeth. Most of the time, we tend to forget about our gums that support our enamel and the surrounding bones. In dentistry, periodontics is a specialty that primarily focuses on diseases that may affect the health of gums and other supporting structures of the teeth.

Who is a periodontist?

Periodontists are dentists who are specially trained to prevent, diagnose, and treat periodontal diseases. Apart from dental school, periodontists receive additional years of training in the specified field. These specialists are highly experienced and use only the latest methods to diagnose and treat the condition.

What treatment does a periodontist offer?

The range of treatment offered by periodontists can vary from mild cases of gingivitis to more severe cases of periodontitis. They also perform preventive regimes such as scaling and root planing, removal of damaged tissues from the roots, and regenerative procedures. In severe cases, the periodontist may also perform surgical procedures. Additionally, periodontists can also repair and provide maintenance for damaged implants.

First Visit

During your initial consultation, the dentist would review the patient's medical history as this gives the dentist a clear understanding of her patient. A careful examination would be conducted to evaluate the patient's gums and biting surface. The dentist also checks for loose teeth and restorations. A specialized dental probe would be used to determine the depth of the periodontal pockets. Further, the dentist may also request for necessary X-rays for better visualization. Based on patient diagnosis, a treatment plan would be laid out.
