Fillings Q&A

What are dental fillings?

Fillings are a type of dental restoration used to repair tooth decay. Tooth decay is one of the most common oral health problems, affecting about 92% of adults in the United States. Fillings help prevent more extensive damage and allow your tooth to function normally without pain or sensitivity.

What is the process for getting fillings?

At Trinh Dental, getting fillings is a quick, in-office procedure.

On the day of your appointment, the team conducts an oral exam and takes digital X-rays to determine the extent of the decay. They administer a local anesthetic to numb your gums and tooth roots, ensuring your comfort.

Once the anesthesia sets in, your dentist carefully removes the decaying portion of your tooth. They then “fill” it with composite resin. They apply a single layer of resin and point a special light at your tooth. The light triggers a chemical reaction, hardening the resin.

Your dentist applies several layers of resin until your tooth resembles its near-original size and appearance. Lastly, they polish your tooth, trim down any excess resin, and check your bite.

How long do fillings take?

An appointment for fillings typically takes 30-60 minutes. The length of your appointment depends on the severity of your tooth decay and the number of affected teeth. Tooth-colored fillings take a little longer than traditional fillings because your dentist applies them in layers.

What is recovery like after getting fillings?

There is no recovery time after a dental filling. Once the anesthesia wears off, you might experience some mild irritation or tooth sensitivity, but this should subside in a day or two.

To reduce tooth sensitivity, the team at Trinh Dental recommends temporarily:

  • Avoiding hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Brushing and flossing more gently than usual
  • Avoiding spicy or acidic foods
  • Taking an over-the-counter pain medication

If your bite feels unusual or you have pain for more than a few days, reach out to the team at Trinh Dental.

How long do fillings last?

Tooth-colored fillings usually last 10-15 years, but you can extend their lifespan by practicing good oral hygiene. To keep your fillings in great shape, the team at Trinh Dental recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting the office every six months for a dental exam.

If you play sports or grind your teeth, you might also want to invest in a mouthguard or night guard to prevent cracking, chipping, or other damage.
