Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are custom-tailored shells of porcelain that the team at Trinh Dental bonds to the front of your natural, permanent teeth. If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, you might only need one veneer, but most people get six or eight to achieve their desired results.

What conditions can veneers treat?

At Trinh Dental, the team uses veneers to treat various oral imperfections, including:

  • Pointy or unusually shaped teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Severe discoloration

Veneers can also cover up gaps or spaces between your teeth.

Does getting veneers take more than one appointment?

Getting veneers typically takes two separate appointments spaced several weeks apart.

At your initial consultation, the Trinh Dental team conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about your goals for treatment. Afterward, they take digital X-rays to check for any signs of tooth decay.

If your teeth are healthy and cavity-free, they move forward with treatment. Your dentist administers a local anesthetic and carefully shaves a layer of enamel from the surfaces of your teeth about one millimeter thick. Then, they take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory that manufactures your veneers.

A week or two later, you return to Trinh Dental, where your dentist aligns and bonds the veneers to your teeth. The second appointment takes 30-60 minutes, and you leave the office with a transformed smile.

What is recovery like after getting veneers?

After getting veneers, and once the anesthesia wears off, you can eat and chew normally. To prevent your veneers from chipping and cracking, make sure to avoid bad habits like nail-biting, chewing on ice cubes, or opening things with your teeth.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers last an average of 10-15 years, but if you take good care of them, they can last even longer.

The team at Trinh Dental recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting the office every six months for a dental exam and professional cleaning. If you play contact sports like football or hockey, wear a mouthguard to protect your veneers in the event of an accident or injury.
